Volunteer of the Year Award – Thank you Mary!
This award has been given since the first days of Alliance for Smiles. Without the intense dedication of our volunteers that number in the hundreds, Alliance for Smiles could not function. It is our honor to bestow this year’s award to the incomparable Mary Liu.
It was 4 years ago that Mary wrote an introduction letter to Alliance for Smiles with her desire to volunteer on medical missions and contribute in any way she could. She had a burning desire to give back to a cause that was personal to her because she was born with a cleft lip and palate. Mary personally knew of the challenges and life-changing results from having or not having a repaired cleft.
Since 2016, Mary has led 3 humanitarian missions as Mission Director and participated in 2 other medical missions in various roles. This year marks her 3rd year as Gala Co-Chair. Mary was also the first GoGo Smile Ambassador representing Alliance for Smiles at various Rotary Clubs and at the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg, Germany. When she’s not volunteering for Alliance for Smiles, or traveling the world, she works with her husband in their real estate business in San Francisco. Mary also led the charge in planning this year’s gala and was an incredible guide and support as we figured out how to change course with the unfolding health crisis that forced us to cancel the in-person event.
On behalf of AfS, I want to give Mary our deepest thanks for her tireless work as, not only a champion for AfS but also as a champion for those children impacted by cleft and their families around the world.
Thank you so much for all you do, Mary!
