7 year old Kerolos came to see our team with a Lip-tie. A small band of tissue between his upper lip and gum was restricting the movement of his lip. Our dentist, Dr. Linda Nakhla took the case and performed a frenulectomy to release his lip from his gum. She and our dental hygienist, Ann followed that up with tooth extractions, abscess draining and teeth cleaning.
Before the procedures, Kerolos couldn’t eat properly, often eating from the side of his mouth. His parents said he couldn’t smile and has become withdrawn at school because other kids make fun of him.
His dad and mom, Adhem and Sabah, learned of the AfS mission through their church, who helped make it possible for them to travel to Sohag for the surgery.
This 10 minute surgery could improve Kerolos’ speech, overall physical and mental health, giving him a smile for the first time in his young life.
After their workday at Sohag University Hospital yesterday, Linda and Ann went to a local orphanage. Dr. Linda examined 7 girls there. She will fill cavities for four of the girls today. Ann demonstrated proper toothbrushing and floss techniques and gave each girl floss and toothbrushes.
Thank you to our friends at the Paramus Rotary Club, Paramus Sunrise Rotary Club, Rotary District 7490, Rotary Club of San Francisco, Trinity International Mission, NJ, and Rotary Club of Sohag for making this possible!
It’s cases like this that hooked me on these missions. We don’t just treat the kids, we change the entire family.
